Your Medical Billing Certificate and What Comes Next

Once you have completed the customized program, you will have received your medical billing certificate.  Now what should you do with it?  Being certified proves that you have the skills required to work in the medical billing field.  The courses you spent so much time and effort to complete have prepared you to work in a medical billing job where accuracy and efficiency are key.  Other than patient care, documentation and data entry of the medical charges is one of the most important parts of a medical operation.

When you are seeking a job in this field, it is important that you show the knowledge of the job, but equally important that you demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly over the phone and face to face.  Even if the job does not include customer contact, you may have to talk with and take direction from doctors or other medical staff members.

Keep your resume to one page.  A good resume will include your objective, goal, work history, credentials and personal contact information.  Read your resume before submitting it for application of each job.  You may be able to change a few sentences or add words to make it as if you wrote the resume for the specific job you apply for.  Also prepare a cover letter for each job.  In it, include your name and contact information, the job title, and something about your skills that make you stand out.  A cover letter should be very short, no more than three paragraphs.

You can find job opportunities in medical billing in several ways, classified ads, online job sites, networking and the good old on-site application process.  A medical billing certificate will allow you to seek employment in the obvious medical fields such as doctor offices and hospitals, but there are many other employment options.  Companies that hire in this field also include insurance companies, dentists, eye doctors, military divisions, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health care agencies, government branches and universities to name a few.  Major corporations even have specialized departments to manage their corporate health care plans.  This is truly a field which has many, many options for people to be gainfully employed.

If you land an interview, make sure you arrive early.  It is better to be early and show your punctual side.  Dress in the appropriate attire.  Even if a company allows for casual dress, wear business casual.  If the company dress policy is business casual, dress full business in a suit.  Turn off your cell phone.  Listen to the entire question before you respond.  If you do not ask any other questions, ask when they plan to make the final decision to hire for the position.

Immediately write and send a very short thank you letter to the individual who interviewed you.  This will show that you have interest in the job, and may be the difference between you and another candidate who did not send a letter.  Again, include your contact information, appointment date and thank the interviewer for their time and consideration to interview you as a potential employee.  Do not ask any questions in the thank you letter.  Save additional questions for the second interview or before you accept the job.
